Here's the photos of the process...

This will all be spread over a few days. Today (Monday) I made Wings/Tail/Spikes. The tail is made out of rice crispy treat, and the wings/spikes are gum paste.

Ingredients for tail: Cocoa Powder, Red Food Coloring by the Crate, Rice Cereal, Marshmallows, Margarine (not butter)

Wings and Spikes were made out of gum paste, water, and confectioner's sugar, in addition to burgundy cake coloring.

PhotobucketThe end product was pretty funky looking on the wings. Though it seems like clay at first, gum paste does not maintain the same properties (Genius, I know). Some major cosmetic surgery will be needed on those wings by day 3.

This Weekend's Projects and House Detail

Here are some pictures I took this weekend of my house projects and rearranging. The coffee table that the big TV is on was originally white, while the shelf above the TV was oak. The bedroom furniture all was originally a medium oak finish. The entertainment center is now a shade darker than before. The candlesticks in the bedroom were Amish oak, but I thought they'd look better shabby chic than in a mahogany finish.

Technology and the Future of Architecture
Imagine yourself arriving at a friend’s home. As you enter the courtyard, mermaids in the fountain spring up, giggle at you, and wave. A graceful unicorn grazes on the grassy knoll on one side, while bright golden eggs sit in the sun on the other. As you approach the front door, you marvel at the intricate scrollwork on the columns and the delicate opalescent swirls on the tile beneath your feet. The large filigreed door swings open at your arrival, anticipating your presence. Entering the foyer, you are entranced. A giant staircase, sparkling like a diamond, yet thin as a hair, rises up on either side of you. Beyond the dazzling entry there is furniture carved more intricately than a human hand could muster, and gloriously detailed mason work that one could only dream of. A finely sanded table, stunning in its elegant simplicity, is framed by chairs covered in impossibly soft, beautifully patterned silk. A pixie flits about, dusting vivid, complex wall hangings, and a tiny nightingale hangs on a silver perch, singing a heartbreakingly beautiful song that seems composed solely for you. You’ve entered a fairy tale, or have you? In actuality, this is the home of the future.
The film industry is filled with its writers’, producers’, and directors’ concepts of the future. Starkly contrasted, asymmetrical furniture, prominently shaped buildings jutting into gravity-defying angles and made of nature-defying materials dominate the future scenes. Filmmakers feature antiseptic technology taking over, with sharp clean lines and droll, however life-like, interfaces. These themes have persisted over many years, from writing into film, the dates being pushed farther into the future. With our current technology being far beyond many of the dreams that the past has imagined for us, why then have we not adapted to the sharply demonstrative style projected for us by so many writers who have forecasted our future? We have not assimilated to this concept because the architecture of the future lies in a much different direction. The architecture and materials of our future lie in the magical realms of our imagination, powered by the technology we will have soon perfected.
With the technology age, the pastimes that were once considered to be “geeky” are now the standard. Fantasy role-playing games have given everyone the ability to live in their own virtual magical world. Currently, there are over 16 million “Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games” (or MMORPG) subscriptions worldwide (Woodcock). This is a computer-based evolution of the fan base of the once overwhelmingly popular Dungeons and Dragons game based heavily on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. One can only anticipate that number growing exponentially with the advent of metaverse technology, also known as the 3D internet. The 3D internet will allow players to interact in a seamless fantasy world, truly becoming their avatars for the time that they are playing. In addition to the many online game players, there is also a large following of fantasy readers, writers, artists, and actors. “More web browsers downloaded the online promotional trailer for The Lord of the Rings during its first 24-hours of availability than any other film marketing footage in history” (Rutherford). A quick search of Amazon.com reveals 35,324 results for the fantasy genre alone (Amazon.com). Fantasy is clearly a rapidly growing market.
The wealth available to be reaped from fantasy sources is becoming notorious world-wide as well. Despite most gaming companies’ policies about purchasing virtual game gold with actual money, there are many successful companies worldwide that cater specifically to this niche market, spending the day cultivating it and selling it in turn. (Liu 40) Meanwhile, some of the most coveted and best-selling fan merchandise is that of fantasy movies. Even Disney recognizes the growing market, and has taken Peter Pan’s Tinkerbell character and spun her into a completely new fairy world, complete with complementary pixie friends.
While there is no doubt that fantasy is a broadening market, applying it to architecture and technology design may prove a little overwhelming at first approach. We have been conditioned to associate the future with metal robotics, asymmetrical oddly shaped buildings, and sharp angles. But this traditionally futuristic architecture is cold and obscure, and though the concept has been around for quite some time, the future has had very little reception in actual homes, mostly being applied to business places in an attempt to make them look as sophisticated and modern as possible. In America, the most popular style of new home construction is Mediterranean ranch style, homage to Italian Renaissance architecture of the past. The futuristic designs of the previously proposed future do not permit a home to be warm and inviting or encourage intimacy and conversation.
While technology has become the blatant signature of this century, we still seek out fantasy realms. We are making advances that our predecessors have not even imagined possible. The innovation of robotics, artificial intelligence and the metaverse, coupled with nano-computer processing systems that are only becoming smaller, will allow us interface options that are beyond the simplistic metal robot scheme. Advanced interfaces, coupled with the already advanced and still rapidly evolving robotics, will enable sophisticated machines and systems that are custom-designed to whatever the consumer can imagine or dream. The popularity and widespread growth of the fantasy genre and role-playing video games demonstrate the extensive market that will seek out these products. The astonishing influence fantasy already has in current culture, both online and in daily life, only cements the pattern further. The accommodations we have made in the current technological age to further the outlets for fantasy exploration, and its warm reception by consumers serve to illustrate how well future innovations will be embraced. Fantasy contrivances will offer consumers a new and simplistic level of departure from the nuances of everyday life.
Although the market for fantasy has been developing for hundreds of years, the concept of virtual reality has always been so obscure that the theories would not include the myriad of applications for such technology. As such, they limited their visions to cold interfaces with dispassionate voices and sterile environments with few signs of life or ease. This antiseptic way of life leaves little to anticipate in intimacy and creature comforts and even less in the potential for creativity.
With the current technology developments under way, the growing fantasy retinue, and the need for an inviting and habitable environment, the future of housing leads up the path of myth and reverie. The novelty of being able to make things of legend tangible – be it an awe-inspiring chimera, a dreadful vampire, or a lovely mermaid – will be irresistible to the formerly ignored, now elite technology wizards and developers. This concept creates personalization beyond one’s wildest dreams – literally. What once was available to people merely as escapism would be a tangible reality. The man who dreams of being king can have his own dynasty, the girl who wishes she had fairy handmaidens will be dressed by her own magical constituents. The daydreams that were once thought fanciful will be able to be masterfully conceptualized and executed into breathtaking brilliance, giving the consumers and designers a product that not only makes them feel extraordinary but serves its highly practical purpose with precision.
Walking out of the house, you can now see the reality of the magical beings and creations. The glittering diamond thin staircase etchings are a force-field created illusion; the tiny pixies are robots with top of the line artificial intelligence. The seemingly intuitive door in actuality opens upon recognizing your genetic signature, and the unicorns are automated landscaping machines. The radiant golden eggs receive the wireless power supply for the house and all of its marvels, while the sweetly singing bird is programmed to project a song composed from your specific biorhythms. The mermaids that greeted you are no more than projected illusions – a sophisticated welcome mat – and the impossibly soft silk and ornate filigrees were created by computerized looms and lasers of the highest caliber. Now, for the first time, you can see the true magic of technology, and its variety of options for creative splendor, and the sight, however practical, is beautiful to behold.
